In the debut episode of Sweet Tea Ethics, Ed Garnes, Dr. Cornel West, and Clifton West challenge Obama’s presidential policies for everyday people, drop science on political pimps, and question priorities of black leaders in high places.

Mixing the reasoning sessions of the local barbershop and fervor of street corner theologians, the inter-generational movement Sweet Tea Ethics confronts topics including manhood, love, bridging generation gaps, and the cross cultural appeal of hip hop.

For the first time ever, the critically acclaimed brothers Dr. Cornel West and Clifton West spoke candidly about their inspiring bond as supportive siblings in a historic dialogue entitled SWEET TEA ETHICS^sm to hundreds of eager attendees. The event was moderated by award-winning writer, counselor, and producer Edward M. Garnes, Jr., founder of From Afros To Shelltoes^sm (FATS), a community based art programming collective focused on bridging generation gaps between youth, elders, and hip hop heads. SWEET TEA ETHICS was held on January 17, 2010 at the Barnes & Nobles (Camp Creek Market Place) located at 3685 Market Place Boulevard in East Point, Georgia.

Far beyond lectures and canned speeches, SWEET TEA ETHICS operated as an open forum that explored love, life, and funk. Mixing the reasoning sessions of the local barbershop and fervor of street corner theologians, the inter-generational talk covered a wide range of topics including President Obama, the N word, role models, hip hop, and spirituality. This special edition of the SWEET TEA ETHICS national tour not only confronted the cultural divide of elders and hip hop heads, but it also challenged clichéd visions of leadership and formal education. Atlanta native Mike Bigga (aka Killer Mike), a respected artist who appears on Dr. Cornel West’s hip hop recordings, made a powerful, impromptu appearance at the request of event producer Garnes.

For Dr. Cornel West, Garnes’ proficiency at sparking solution focused dialogue is unmatched. “Here is the significance of my dear brother Ed Garnes, Jr. and Sweet Tea Ethics. There is no other group that can bring together such engaged, high quality, and substantial dialogue about the crucial issues facing not just the black community, but also American society. Thank God for brother Ed Garnes, Jr.”

Elder brother Clifton West, visibly moved by the program, felt the collaboration was in divine order. “Sweet Tea Ethics was a reveling in love, connection, purpose, and life. It was an association and affiliation of like heartedness that will hopefully be a launching pad for good things to come.”

In the eyes of Garnes, an Atlanta Tribune Man Of Distinction, the event was life altering. “SWEET TEA ETHICS is all about mixing grandma stories and life experience to heal everyday blues. This past Sunday, my good brother Ed Garnes hosted an intimate conversation with one Dr. Cornel West and his older brother Clifton. During the candid and insightful discussion, “Corn”, king of punchy one-liners, dropped quite a few gems on the eager audience. I found myself taking notes like I was in class. One of the most poignant observations made by Dr. West dealt with the fallacy of media and pop culture icons as so called role models for the rest of us. Dr. West said: “Your role model is not on t.v. That may be your inspiration, but your role model should be someone you can touch. You say Oprah is your role model, but if you need some advice or assistance, you can’t call Oprah.” I along with the crowd laughed and agreed.

Ed Garnes

Atlanta native Edward M. Garnes, Jr. is an award winning journalist, counselor, educator, editor, producer, and activist. He is the founder of From Afros to Shelltoes: Art ,Action & Conversation, a community based organization uniquely focused on cultural productions that bridge generation gaps between youth, elders, and the hip hop community. The 2009 Atlanta Tribune Man Of Distinction holds a B.A. in English Writing from DePauw University and a M.A. in Counseling from Michigan State University where he studied as a Competitive Fellow in Urban Counseling.

Garnes’ seminal essay, ” Sweet Tea Ethics: Black Luv, Healthcare, and Cultural Mistrust,” currently appears in Not In My Family: AIDS in the African American Community , a 2007 NAACP Image Award nominated collection edited by Gil Robertson. Garnes’ film and television credits include Finally Sayin’ What I Really Mean, a feature length music documentary featuring Jill Scott, Common, and Saul Williams, and the Black Family Channel’s Spoken, a poetry program hosted and produced by Jessica Care Moore. As a highly sought after commentator on hip hop, black identity, manhood, and popular culture, Garnes has appeared on the CW Network, Sirrus Radio, CBS Radio, allhiphop.com.

A longtime music contributor to Creative Loafing, he has profiled and interviewed such cutting edge artists as Spike Lee, Outkast, Gerald Levert, Erykah Badu, and DMC (Run DMC). A finalist for the Fulton County Arts Council Dialog Literary Fellowship, he has opened for Nikki Giovanni, Amiri Baraka, and The Last Poets.

Clifton West

Clifton L. West III is the eldest to Clifton L. West, Jr. and Irene B. West. A former track and field star, West graduated from the University of California with a degree in Psychology and has worked at IBM, MIT and Lincoln Laboratories. Clifton West also started his own private computer software business for 37 years.

Clifton’s passion for music and service resulted in him becoming a co-founder of BMWMB, (Black Men Who Mean Business) a musical movement consisting of Dr. Cornel West and Mike Dailey. It is dedicated to the empowerment, affirmation, and education of all but especially black youth, through the medium of music.

Currently, Clifton resides in Lodi, CA with his wife, three children, four beautiful grandchildren and continues to work in computers and serve the Lord everyday.

Dr. Cornel West

One of America’s most provocative public intellectuals, Cornel West has been a champion for racial justice since childhood. His writing, speaking, and teaching weave together the traditions of the black Baptist Church, progressive politics, and jazz. The New York Times has praised his “ferocious moral vision.”

Currently the Class of 1943 Professor at Princeton University, Dr. West burst onto the national scene in 1993 with his bestselling book, Race Matters, a searing analysis of racism in American democracy. Race Matters has become a contemporary classic, selling more than half a million copies to date. In his latest work, Hope on a Tightrope, he offers courageous commentary on issues that affect the lives of all Americans. Themes include Race, Leadership, Faith, Family, Philosophy, Love and Service. Cornel West has published 19 other books and has edited 13 texts. West also offers commentary weekly on The Tavis Smiley Show from PRI (Public Radio International).

West was an influential force in developing the storyline for the popular Matrix movie trilogy and has served as its official spokesperson, as well as playing a recurring role in the final two films.

Dr. West graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University and has a Ph.D. from Princeton.
