Armed with Art and The Haitian Alliance have joined forces to organize emergency relief funds and supplies for our Haitian brothers and sisters. Please help us impact the lives of 100 Hatians at a time. All proceeds will go towards the purchase of emergency aid & shipment.

When: Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010
Where: Eyedrum – 290 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, SW; Atlanta, GA 30312
Time: Doors – 7:30 p.m.; Show – 8 p.m.
Who: Featured poets & musicians with guest performances by Theresa Davis, Caheej, Mama Paula Larke, Nukola and Guilty Penmanship!

Contribution(s): 10$ suggested donation. We will also be accepting the below items:

1. Water, water, water…
2. First Aid Kits (medical supplies)
3. Food (non-perishable items. NO CANNED GOODS, please)
4. Feminine hygiene products (e.g., tampons/ sanitary napkins/pads)

Invite you to submit up to two (2) poems (no poem longer than 1,000 words) to

“100 Poems of Solidarity for Haiti”

· The poem and AN INTERVIEW of one (winning) writer will be published in the ART CHANGES section of In Motion Magazine and $200.00 will be donated to the Haiti relief effort in their name.

· In addition, the best poems of the 100 will be published in In Motion Magazine.

· AND all one hundred poems will be available for download in a PDF (for a small fee, which will be donated to Haiti relief efforts).

Following one of the most devastating natural disasters in modern memory, Haitians are digging themselves out from under tons of rubble. The true extent of the earthquake is not known because few people have ventured outside of the capital to find out the fate of those living in rural areas.

While there has been constant news coverage, much of what I have heard has been tinged with denigrating remarks towards the Haitian people. I believe we are witnessing a new wave of racist speech and news coverage that rivals coverage pre 1960. As the world pours out prayers and sends appeals for aid to help the survivors and those trapped, Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh have chosen to raise their race baiting hate speech to an all new level.

We know that art can heal, we invite you to write poem of solidarity from your heart to the people of Haiti to help them in their healing. You may submit up to two (2) poems with no poem longer than 1,000 words. There is no fee involved. All poems should be submitted as an attachment in .doc format to: alovelace_99@yahoo.com

Alice Lovelace on the events’ peaceful purpose:

At the core of this multifaceted gathering, now in its third year of existence, is King’s 1967 Beyond Vietnam speech, his public condemnation of war and the “giant triplets” of racism, militarism, and poverty. AFSC wants this Peace Legacy event to raise up King’s anti-war message that seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle; it was a profound and remarkably courageous stand. We want young people to know that the freedom they have today came at a price, and we use art to convey that message in an inspirational means. One of our objectives is to bring new faces to the Peace movement. Youth, and especially black youth, must understand that they have a place in the Peace Movement. This event is for anyone who wants to understand the link between the Peace Movement and the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King is the linchpin between the two movements.
