Born to Afro-Caribbean parents, Sugar Johnson hails from the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn with a brief stint in the Caribbean during his formative years. The actor, vocalist, author, and educator has spent more than a decade captivating audiences in various mediums, including a five year stint as a cable access television producer/host. His critically acclaimed chap book series has the blessing of heavy weights like Spike Lee, who invited the burgeoning artist to open for him at a collegiate speaking event.
After obtaining his B.A. in Mathematics from DePauw University, he went on to perform at major venues and universities, sharing the stage with prolific artists including The Last Poets, Amiri Baraka, and Louis Reyes Rivera. Johnson’s poems are featured in the popular series, Signifying Harlem, edited by Jade Banks, and he has studied under Erica Hunt in the esteemed Cave Canem Workshop.
The incomparable thespian worked with Joie Lee (40 Acres and a Mule Filmworks) on the project, 4 Years to Life, for the Urban World Film Festival. Lee says, “It makes all the difference in the world to see an actor enjoy himself in the work and this is Sugar.” The southern boy from Brooklyn also appears as a cast member on Jessica Care Moore’s Spoken on the Black Family Channel and did a special theatrical performance during the Prince of Wales’ visit to Harlem.
Currently Johnson produces What Had Happened Was, a 90 minute one man show including comedy, original musical selections, gramma stories and plain ole conventional wisdom. The one man show has been produced in both New York and Atlanta. When he’s not trying to take the world stage by storm, Johnson teaches math, poetry and drama in public and private schools throughout New York City.
Johnson will soon release the highly anticipated poetry collection Food, Clothes, and Shelter, featuring a foreword by M1 of the hip hop collective Dead Prez, on his imprint Home Grown Publishing, LLC.
