I cowered at the revelation that our soul brother number one, musical architect Don Cornelius, whose funky good time was always buoyed by a distinguished gentleman aesthetic, had taken his own life. Not by a pill popping escapade gone woefully astray, but rather a volatile projectile to the dome. This was personal. A profound proclamation of sadness with a mountainous burden: Do you hear me now?

Artist Fahamu Pecou Pushes Role Models

This past Sunday, my good brother Ed Garnes hosted an intimate conversation with one Dr. Cornel West and his older brother Clifton. During the candid and insightful discussion, “Corn”, king of punchy one-liners, dropped quite a few gems on the eager audience. I found myself taking notes like I was in class. One of the most poignant observations made by Dr. West dealt with the fallacy of media and pop culture icons as so called role models for the rest of us. Dr. West said: “Your role model is not on t.v. That may be your inspiration, but your role model should be someone you can touch. You say Oprah is your role model, but if you need some advice or assistance, you can’t call Oprah.” I along with the crowd laughed and agreed.
