I cowered at the revelation that our soul brother number one, musical architect Don Cornelius, whose funky good time was always buoyed by a distinguished gentleman aesthetic, had taken his own life. Not by a pill popping escapade gone woefully astray, but rather a volatile projectile to the dome. This was personal. A profound proclamation of sadness with a mountainous burden: Do you hear me now?

ATL Love Haiti A Night Of Music And Support

Submitted by on January 15, 2010 – 11:25 pmNo Comment |

There is always something to do. There are hungry people to feed, naked people to clothe, sick people to comfort and make well. And while I don’t expect you to save the world I do think it’s not asking too much for you to love those with whom you sleep, share the happiness of those whom you call friend, engage those among you who are visionary and remove from your live those who offer you depression, despair and disrespect.”  Nikki Giovanni

Peace to our play cousins Keith “Kebo” Brown and Jodine Dorce as they join NBAF to give aid. Don’t talk act!!!!!

Time: 7:30pm – 10:30pm

Location: Churchill Grounds Jazz Club

Street: 660 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, GA

We are devastated by the suffering of our Haitian neighbors. The images we have witnessed open our hearts up to their utter sorrow. These mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles, children, people, human beings … are our responsibility just as we are responsible for those in our own families and communities. Standing by is not an option at this moment in time and action is the only course.

Join us on Sunday, January 17 at Churchill Grounds Jazz Club, 660 Peachtree Street at 7:30 PM for Love : Haiti – A Night of Music to Support the Humanitarian Effort in Haiti. Featured artists include Joi, Mausiki Scales and Common Ground Collective, Chanda McKnight, Russell Gunn, Big Rube, Avery Sunshine, Ken Ford, Luis Carreras, Vinx, DJ Vando and others. Hosted by Leatrice Ellzy, Jodine Dorce and Keith A. Brown.

The recommended donation is $25. The minimum donation is $15 and will be collected at the door. Proceeds will be given to UNICEF, a reputable 501(c) 3 organization operating in Haiti since 1949. They have a team on the ground able to provide services to children in the early hours of this disaster.

If you are unable to come to Churchill Grounds we encourage you to log on to http://www.ustream.tv/channel/love-haiti where we will be streaming live and taking donations online. If you cannot stay for the event, PLEASE feel free to drop by with any donation you spare to show your support.

Love : Haiti is a project of the National Black Arts Festival. Special thanks to Churchill Grounds Jazz Club for opening their doors, the artists/poets/DJ’s for saying YES! and Red Creative for providing the imaging.
