I cowered at the revelation that our soul brother number one, musical architect Don Cornelius, whose funky good time was always buoyed by a distinguished gentleman aesthetic, had taken his own life. Not by a pill popping escapade gone woefully astray, but rather a volatile projectile to the dome. This was personal. A profound proclamation of sadness with a mountainous burden: Do you hear me now?

Alice Lovelace, who I affectionately call the God Mother of From Afros To Shelltoes, is always down for the people in the most progressive ways possible. An activist who believes in art at work, she is our bridge to the past and link to future. Support her efforts by forwarding this info on to others, posting on your blog, and telling cool people ready for substantive change.

Alice Lovelace on the events’ peaceful purpose:

At the core of this multifaceted gathering, now in its third year of existence, is King’s 1967 Beyond Vietnam speech, his public condemnation of war and the “giant triplets” of racism, militarism, and poverty.  AFSC wants this Peace Legacy event to raise up King’s anti-war message that seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle; it was a profound and remarkably courageous stand.  We want young people to know that the freedom they have today came at a price, and we use art to convey that message in an inspirational means. One of our objectives is to bring new faces to the Peace movement. Youth, and especially black youth, must understand that they have a place in the Peace Movement. This event is for anyone who wants to understand the link between the Peace Movement and the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King is the linchpin between the two movements.
