Soul Sista’s Juke Joint Presents “Ain’t I A Woman”

Atlanta, GA – December 3, 2009 – Be a witness to the upcoming edition of Soul Sista’s Juke Joint™, “Ain’t I a Woman.” This captivating evening integrates theatrics, live music, poetry, juke joint characters and an all-female band of seasoned musicians. On Friday, December 11, 2009 at 9:00pm (doors at 8:00pm), Tiempo Privado will host this season’s line-up of the industry’s leading artists and budding legends.

Expect soul-stirring performances by Miss Soli’s Blues, Twin Spirit, Dezaray Dawn, Princess La Tremenda, Shanti Om, NuKola, Gianna, and DJ Ghost. Visual artist, GraceKisa will join the production, along with special guest, HBO DEF poet, Jon Goode. Music will be provided by The Soul Sista’s Juke Joint Band.

Soul Sista’s Juke Joint™ transcends being just another live music showcase. It is a unique, interactive, cabaret-style evening, where original works of emerging independent artists from varying artistic genres are interwoven into a thematic, live-music, theatrical production. It’s an experience where artistic women can encourage, inspire and support each other, while spreading their wings on stage.

This performance’s theme, “Ain’t I A Woman,” draws from the words of Sojourner Truth and her historic address in 1851 at Women’s Convention in Akron, Ohio. Through truthful introspection, Sojourner Truth revealed the disparity between the movement for women’s rights and the rights of the African women. Soul Sista’s Juke Joint™ comes together on December 11, in order to ask the same question “Ain’t I a Woman” through our contemporary lens touching both men and women alike into deeper revelation.

“Everything begins with a woman. Everyone loves a woman. Through our performances, we give credit to where credit is due; to our mothers, aunts, sisters and daughters,” says the founder of Soul Sista’s Juke Joint™, Kemi Bennings. “We give thanks to the powerful presence and contributions women make to our homes, communities and society at large.”

Soul Sista’s Juke Joint™ was birthed from the need to provide a platform and nurturing space for emerging and independent female artists in art and music, in addition to bringing quality entertainment programming to Atlanta. The event’s brainchild, Kemi Bennings (“Queen Bee”), poet, soul singer and art activist, claims her personal mission to “inspire a generation of artistic change.”

Since its inception in May 2002, Soul Sista’s Juke Joint™ showcased over 200 artists from different independent/emerging artist hubs in Atlanta, New York, Florida, DC, Philadelphia, Memphis, and Canada to name a few.

In alliance with M.O.B.B. (Mothers of Black/Brown Babies), Soul Sista’s Juke Joint™ will collect clothing and toiletries during the December production. Items in demand include women and children’s clothing, specifically packs of undergarments and plus sizes for women. Toiletries, such as deodorant, soap, diapers/pull-ups, and feminine products, are also in great need.

Mark your calendar for the Soul Sista’s Juke Joint™ final performance of 2009! Tiempo Privado is located at 2865 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30318
