ED: Now that’s a diverse collection. Talk about how you and TBOZ got together to collaborate on Instant Vintage.
SAADIQ: Well I am a fan of TBOZ to. I always that she had a really unique voice. It’s funky. What I really like about TBOZ is that she don’t even know how dope she is. And that makes her dope. She has allot of fame and been allot of places and still has a level head. That’s the kinda people I like to work with. So it makes it easy to produce TLC and work with TLC cuz I felt like I was part of the band. Once you feel apart of the group, it is easy to work in that structure.
TBOZ: We were in the studio running Raphael raged. ( Laughing)
SAADIQ: I was coming from New York after being caught up in the September 11 thing. I was on the way to that building (The Twin Towers)-my accountant was in that building-and the plane went in before I got there. So, Joi, Shanti, and me drove straight to Atlanta. When I got there, I was in such a hollow mood. The song just came out and I was like yo, ” Do you (TBOZ) wanna do this song with me?” She fit so perfect on the song….like she was born to sing it
ED: That’s why I asked. It just sounded like you really had her in mind.
SAADIQ: Yeah, I wrote it in Atlanta.
TBOZ: Allot of my TLC fans come up to me about that song. Raphael, my mother and fans say that is the best song I have ever done. Everybody I know who has ever heard it says it touches them. It is funny to even hear hard core men say they love that song. So that song is big with people. Thanks for the opportunity to be on your album.
SAADIQ: Ah, you are welcome. I am glad that you are on it. A lady stopped me at one of my shows in LA and told me that she had to wake up to that album everyday. She said the song really did something for her.. They call it the TBOZ song.
TBOZ: Really?
SAADIQ: The song is called “Different Times”. I shoulda called it the TBOZ song cuz that what everybody calls it. I am glad the song and album is really reaching people and they really feel it. Mary J called about it. Reaching our fellow artists and consumers in a positive way-no matter what song- is what music should be about.
TBOZ: I have to say that my favorite song is “Still Ray”. Are you gonna do a video for it?
SAADIQ: We are about to do one in a couple of weeks.
TBOZ: Well if you need me for number nine!
SAADIQ: Yeah we gonna do that. If I put that song in a movie it would be a single everywhere. It needs to happen cuz that is a special song. I feel like it was really made for her. TBOZ has been sick off and on, and that song is like wow!
TBOZ: I got out the hospital, thanked him for the pretty flowers he sent, and told him that song was my life. The song is special to me as person. (Pause)
