In my personal situations, I've found that testing the waters & hoping he calls afterwards is moot. Its ok to want casual sex, however, be prepared for the fall-back. If you want more, be up-front about it. He may be just as insecure about his performance afterward, as you are in your assumption that he's won the battle. If he answers, step 1 accomplished.
